What happens to your body when you detox from sugar

We all know sugar isn’t good for us… but why is it so hard to avoid and/or eliminate from our diets? One, because it is unfortunately hidden in what seems like EVERYTHING but two, because it is very addictive. Sugar does a number of negative things in our bodies – including increased inflammation, creates stress on your liver, disrupts your digestive system, complexion issues, contributes to leptin resistance (leptin is the hormone that controls feelings of hunger and satiety), and doesn’t fill us up when we eat it, which can lead to overeating.

Because sugar is so addictive, it is important to make sure we are very careful with how much we consume or even better – cut it out all together!

What happens to our body when we detox from sugar?

I can tell you this from personal experience… the first few days can be a little rough, but hang in there because it is SO worth it. These “tough days” vary from person to person but they typically occur in the first week of cutting sugar out of your diet.

Week 1

Giving up sugar in our diets can cause withdrawal-like symptoms because dopamine (our “happy” hormone) levels decrease, while acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that regulates pain perception, rises. Symptoms present differently for each person but most commonly people experience headaches, decreased energy levels and mental sharpness and GI issues.

While all of that sounds extremely unpleasant, it is important to remember that it is only temporary! Also to remember that the end result and benefits your body is gaining from it are way more than worth it.

Week 2

Starting your second week without sugar you are likely going to be feeling a lot better. Energy levels are typically higher, brain fog is usually gone, but this week is crucial! Your body is still going to want that sugar, so it is important that you eat a lot of healthy fats, protein and fiber with each meal to help you feel full longer and resist those sugar cravings.

Week 3

Once you’ve made it to week three, you will really start to notice the benefits of eliminating sugar from your diet. By this time, the cravings and symptoms are usually gone and you may even notice some weight loss. Weight loss can occur because extra sugar is stored in our bodies as fat so when you take away the extra sugar you’ve been feeding your body, the fat typically goes away with it.

Remember when we talked about sugar being addictive? Well, once you make it through three weeks of having no sugar, believe it or not, it actually won’t taste the same to you. Our taste buds become hypersensitive to all things sweet which makes it so much easier to turn down the cookies and cake at a family gathering.

An Ongoing Journey

You aren’t in the clear quite yet though, and quite honestly it will likely be an ongoing journey. But, you’ve made it past the hardest part and from here on out the most important thing is reading labels and being very aware and cautious of what you put in your body. Sugar can be hidden in things we think are healthy, like salad dressings, juices, instant oatmeal and various drinks.

You will find that you have a much healthier relationship with sugar and once you experience how good you can feel without it — you won’t want to go back.
